When We're Left Alone was inspired by Martin Kippenbergers' The Happy End of Franz Kafka's "Amerika". It was comprised of a black box stage which contained a chalk line silhouette of the artist, a work light, and six "mountain" totems. The totems reference the domestic, as they often evolve from a piece of furniture. They are stand-ins for actors involved in an imagined drawing-room-farce about the follies of work in the studio.
