When We're Left Alone was inspired by Martin Kippenbergers' The Happy End of Franz Kafka's "Amerika". It was comprised of a black box stage which contained a chalk line silhouette of the artist, a work light, and six "mountain" totems. The totems are based in a domestic language, often evolved from a piece of furniture, and stand in for actors involved in an imagined drawing room farce about the follies of work in the studio.
